What is the Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) 2026?

Hansen Leadership Institute is a highly competitive fully, funded leadership training program located in the United States which unites young leaders globally for advanced leadership training, diplomacy, mediation, conflict resolution, and global cooperation. The program is funded and supported by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation and based at the University of San Diego.

This is neither a traditional academic scholarship (e.g., bachelors or masters) nor a three, week intensive fellowship only. It is meant to:

Enhance leadership potentialDevelop ethical and visionary leadership qualitiesProvide participants with peacebuilding and conflict mediation skillsFacilitate the creation of meaningful intercultural and professional networksThe HLI program though community engagement, collaboration across cultures, and lifelong connections with peers and mentors.

In order to apply, you are generally requested to submit:

Filled online application form

It comprises:

a personal dataacademic historyleadership and extracurricular activitiesa couple of short personal statements or essays on leadership and goalsAcademic transcripts

Official and/or unofficial transcripts from the university where you are currently studying or have recently graduated from.

Two recommendation letters.

Referees contacts are to be provided by you. They will be sent the recommendation forms online:

* One academic reference (professor / adviser) to confirm your academic standing and English proficiency.

* One community / NGO / organization reference to confirm your leadership and community engagement.

Documentation of English proficiency.

You wont be requested to provide test scores your proficiency will be confirmed through the academic reference questionnaire.

Passport details.

You must possess a valid passport on the program start day in case you dont have one, its advised to apply for it well in advance.

To be considered for the 2026 HLI Fellowship, candidates must satisfy the following main criteria.\n\nAge Requirement\n\nYou should be between 20 and 25 (both inclusive) as of July 1, 2026.\n\nThe age requirement is binding for all applicants (U.S. and international).\n\nEducational Requirement\n\nBy the time you submit your application, a student should have completed at least one academic year in college or university.\n\nIf you are no longer a student, you are expected to be a recent graduate (Class of 2024 or 2025).\n\nThere is no rigid requirement for a specific major or area of study, students from all academic fields are eligible to apply provided other criteria are met.\n\nLeadership Experience”,

Selection Process & Competitiveness.

Entry is competitive. The statistics from the past years indicate a high number of applicants but limited number of slots (usually around a few dozen fellows per year).
