The Niskanen Center Summer Internship

 

provides a paid internship program which enables students to gain experience in public policy with the Niskanen Center, a Washington D.C. think tank that develops workable solutions for public policy problems. The center addresses multiple areas which include economic security, criminal justice reform, climate policy development, immigration policy changes, and improvements to government capacity. The internship program provides students with practical training in research abilities and writing skills and communication and federal government operations.

The Washington D.C. internship program provides students and professionals who work in their first job with authentic policy work experience which takes place within an office environment.

What You Must Submit The application process requires you to submit these documents:

Writing sample (up to 3,000 words): Preferably a policy-related paper or piece showing analytical strength

Statement of interest or motivation letter: The candidate must write a brief explanation of approximately 300 words which describes his motivation for pursuing this internship.

The applicant must select two policy departments that they would like to work with. Your dedication to your chosen work area shows that you have evaluated your potential contributions. Financial Support / Stipend

Selected interns receive monthly stipends which reach a maximum value of $1,000 USD. Interns who work in Washington D.C. receive this financial support which helps them pay for their living expenses during their internship.

The stipend provides essential financial assistance which helps cover housing expenses and essential living expenses but it does not function as a salary or grant. Internships provide additional networking opportunities which help students develop their professional skills.

Niskanen Center interns complete the following tasks which their organization requires.

✅ The research team needs your support to investigate economic security climate immigration and criminal justice research topics. The research team needs your help to write reports and blog posts and policy briefs and other communication materials. The research team requires your assistance to gather data and conduct analysis work. The research team needs your assistance to complete their work with experts in policy and research and staff members who handle communication work. The research team engages in various professional activities which include meetings and workshops and networking events. The team will show you how policymakers discuss actual governmental issues which exist in real life.
